Olivier Messiaen and his music
Messiaen’s music is like a turning crystal, reflecting different colours and lights from the same source. It is brilliant; ranging from exquisite sweetness and tenderness to exuberant joy. To listen to Messiaen, don’t try to follow it – it doesn’t go anywhere. Like meditation, he takes an idea, an emotion and then opens it up, moving from facet to facet. Simply allow your mind and body to open and absorb the music.
To understand Messiaen and his music is to know that he was, above all, a man of love.
What others have said about this CD
I LOVE it!
Ross Edwards, Australian Composer
What wonderful music – an amazing combination of dazzling radiance and serenity, hypnotic and almost jazzy at times. It is a lovely three-dimensional space to inhabit, like a jungle at night full of birds and shooting stars. The music is so strong, yet delicate and tender at the same time. I just love it.
