Meditation and mindfulness for kids - modules
Our wonderful kid’s teacher, Nicole Powell, is taking Terms 3 & 4 off to complete her studies in Child Psychology.

Children (6–10 years) can learn meditation and mindfulness techniques – learning these life skills in a fun and interactive way.
Each term we present one of four self contained modules. Children can enrol in just one, or up to all four of the modules. Each module revises exercises as well as offers new activities and knowledge.
Calm & clear kids
Learning how to calm a busy mind, being able to find a still quiet place, these are invaluable skills for children of all ages (parents too!). A calm mind is the foundation for being able to focus well and pay attention – essential attributes for later success in life and increasingly important abilities for dealing with the shortening attention spans that often accompany use of phones and tablets.
This module encourages developing calm through awareness of the body and the breath. Side effects include reducing stress and anxiety!
Simple and practical loosening exercises and spot meditations are taught as a means of relaxing the body and calming the mind. Diaries are given to students with reminders of material taught in the lesson.
Creating healthy and happy minds
No-one can escape potentially harmful stress in our lives but we can learn to recognise what triggers it and how our body and emotions react to it. This module offers useful knowledge on the harmful effects of stress if it is allowed to dominate. Also, we’ll explore practical ways to enhance positive emotions and feelings of wellbeing.
Activities include an explanation of the effects of stress on our nervous system; how our environment can lift our spirits or dampen them, exploring words and their emotional power; familiarising students with the early warning signs that stress is building and where it is located in their bodies.
Loosening exercises, spot meditations and quiet inner awareness practice give students the tools to continue their practice beyond the lessons, using weekly diaries as reminders.
Focus, mindfulness and meditation are particularly important skills for young students who wish to pursue valuable studies in the future; without it, learning can become shallow. Being aware of the senses of sight, smell, touch, sound, taste and humour gives students a head start in life as they become more aware not only of their own bodies but also their mind and emotions.
Students are encouraged to see, smell, touch, listen to and taste a variety of objects and sounds without judgement, then notice labels and stories attached to them and finally be able to say whether they found them pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. This self-knowledge is enhanced with loosening exercises, spot meditations and longer meditations on the senses. Meditation diaries act as reminders and students are encouraged to give feedback on their practice each week.
Einstein’s quote – “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress….” – reminds us that if we train our inner creative abilities, we then have a valuable tool for life. Current neuroscience research backs up the claims that visualisation and training the imagination involve widespread brain activation, often linked with better emotional regulation, planning and decision making abilities.
This module uses loosening exercises; spot meditations; longer meditations on observing thoughts; visualisation and imagery to calm and connect with the body, senses and mind. As well as visualisation, mindful movements such as body tapping, pushing the waves and self-massage of the eyes and head are introduced. What it means to ‘connect to inner sanctuary’ is discussed as well as the values of kindness to self and others, forgiveness, empathy, compassion and gratitude. Weekly diaries serve to remind students of skills learnt in lessons.

My 6 year old is always on the move until he passes out at night. Since he started mindfulness at Lifeflow he has started to slow down. He really enjoys going to the sessions and always comes home ready to show us what he’s learnt. He tries most nights to do some form of meditation and is sleeping better. While he’s still a cyclone he’s more a category 2 than 4. It’s only been one term so we’re hoping the second term will bring him to category 1. A happy mum.
